The Southern Riverina’s very own beauty queen Poppy Ford-Jenkins (pictured) will represent Australia at the Top Model of the World Pageant in Egypt.
The 176cm tall, 19 year-old glamour found out about the opportunity last week.
Poppy — who has only recently moved to Melbourne from her family home between Finley and Tocumwal — admitted the news was still sinking in.
‘‘It doesn’t feel real and I don’t think it’s hit me yet,’’ she said.
‘‘I love travel so this will be an exciting travel opportunity.
‘‘I’m currently doing a gap year before I start a journalism degree at La Trobe Uni in Melbourne, so to date, my gap year is looking pretty good.’’
Poppy will travel to Egypt this month where she will be one of 52 women competing for their home countries.
Similar to a Miss Australia or Miss Universe pageant, they will be judged on three categories — interview, swimwear and evening gown.
Poppy’s parents Simone Ford-Jenkins and Finley Regional Care CEO Shane Jenkins agree it is an amazing opportunity for the teen, who only started modelling two years ago.
‘‘I feel very proud and very excited for her,’’ Mr Jenkins said.
‘‘The exposure will be excellent and this event is very highly regarded in the USA, and especially in South America.
‘‘Poppy is a very pleasant, friendly, inclusive girl and I’m proud she’ll be representing Australia but also the outback.’’
Poppy’s modelling career started when she joined the Melbourne-based agency Primodels.
And it wasn’t long before she was hitting international catwalks.
‘‘I was 17 when I began doing classes with Primodels and, after signing me up, we went to New York,’’ Poppy said.
‘‘That was an amazing, eye opening experience.
‘‘We visited major modelling agencies and did work for New York Fashion Week.
‘‘We learnt how hardcore and to the point the industry is, however it was very inspiring and made me want to do modelling even more.’’
Primodels has been a sponsor and partner in the Couture Fashion Week New York Spring 2015 Collections and has also featured some of its models in New York Fashion Week, Vogue Italia and the Couture Fashion Week Billboard in Times Square, New York.
Primodels co-founder Paul Roberts was responsible for casting Poppy to the international event.
Judging for the Top Model of the World Pageant will begin on August 20.
The overall winner will be chosen by a VIP Jury on September 4 in Egypt, and there will also be a public vote.
